Supercharging the 2011 5.0 Mustang: ProCharger Leads the Way

When it comes to supercharging the world’s favorite pony car, the Ford Mustangs, there’s no argument that ProCharger is the most popular aftermarket supercharger. Now, with the return of the venerable “5.0″ badge to the fender, it’s truly legend meets legend again.

Following ProCharger’s first-to-market introduction of the High Output (HO) intercooled supercharger system for the 2011 5.0 Mustang in July of 2010, thousands of the Mustang faithful were clamoring for more information… more pictures and of course, more power for their Mustangs. Helping to fuel their need for speed and information, the Mustang media was more than willing to tell their readers about the ULTIMATE power adder for these hot new five-liters.

Muscle Mustangs & Fast Ford magazine

Working with Blow-By Racing in Boca Raton, FL, MM&FF was the first print magazine to get their shot at covering the installation of an HO system onto a manual-transmission 2011 5.0 Mustang. In spite of the oppressive southern Florida heat, this white-hot Mustang laid down some cool ProCharged dyno numbers. With the P-1SC-1 supercharger installed, the install resulted in 524.25 rwhp, a gain of more than 155 hp on a completely stock engine and exhaust system.

If that wasn’t enough fun, the horsepower fiends at Blow-By just happened to have a fresh D-1SC ProCharger sitting around, or in this case, waiting to make history. With an off-road pipe, D-1SC, fuel pump booster and custom tune installed, the white Mustang spun the dyno to the tune of  607.53 rwhp…on a stock engine!

If you haven’t done so already, pick up the December 2010 issue of MM&FF or check out the online version of the article here.

Thanks to Pete Epple at MM&FF and Chris Jones and his team at Blow-By Racing for all their help in making this installation editorial happen in such a timely fashion.

StangTV.com

With some very fortetious timing, we were able to line up a brand new Mustang that was just being delivered and prepped by Raceskinz for display at SEMA. The gang at StangTV fired up their cameras and docuemented another install, this one in the crazy heat of a California summer. With just 15 miles on the odometer and a bright, shinney ProCharger HO supercharger system under the hood, this car put down 523.8 rwhp in the 103 degree heat. Oh yeah: this installation was completed in just over four hours!

And yes, this is the same car that was featured in Ford’s 2010 SEMA display.

Check out the StangTV.com story and video here and thanks to the PowerTV crew for their efforts and cool heads.

5.0 Mustang & Super Fords magazine

In the magazine that bears the legendary 5.0 name, Tech Editor KJ Jones was more than willing to cover an east coast installation of the HO system onto a new 5.0 Mustang - this one equipped with the high-tech six-speed automatic transmission. Like the previous two cars, this Grabber Blue 2011 5.0 Mustang was fitted with an intercooled HO system and a fully-polished P-1SC-1 supercharger. With the automatic transmission abosrbing some of the new-found power, it still put down a very solid 517 rwhp.

The story appears in the Jan. 2011 issue of 5.0 Mustang & Super Fords magazine or you can read the complete article on 5.0 Mustang & Super Ford’s web site here.

Special thanks to KJ Jones and his astonshing cross-country tech editor efforts and to the crew at Evolution Performance in Aston, PA for their assistance and subsequent efforts to take these new 5.0 Mustangs into numerous eye-opening performances on the track (first forced induction 2011 into the 9s, and the first 2011 into the 8s).

After this editorial, this very same car was fitted with the recently-released Stage II Intercooler and larger air filter and ran in the mid-10s at the NMRA season-ending event in Bowling Green, KY.

New! Aster Auto Spring Loaded Tensioner Bracket Assembly for the 98-02 LS1 F Body

The Aster Auto Spring loaded tensioner is able to automatically adjust as the belt stretches during increased engine RPM. This accomplishes three major benefits over a manual tensioner.

  1. Static tension can be lower as you only need to keep the belt taught in its current state.
  2. Belt stretching is of little concern as the tensioner will move to maintain tension.
  3. The spring in the unit acts as a shock absorber for vibration in the belt reducing stress on the bracket system and alleviating rattle and noise.

High Mileage ProChargers

ProCharger’s commitment to quality and reliability is evident in the concrete examples of customer success we have seen over the past 15 years; 39 national racing championships in the last six years, top finishers at the DynoMax Power to the Wheels, World’s Fastest Camaro and Mustang at Bonneville, HOT ROD Pump Gas Drags and Drag Week wins, several drag racing records, millions of customer street miles driven, and the list goes on and on.

Well, today we have something different: 150,000 daily driven street and strip miles on a P-1SC self-contained ProCharger supercharger. Yes, we recently had a customer send in his P-1SC ProCharger to be rebuilt and upgraded to the more powerful D-1SC. This supercharger was on a 100% daily driver that also saw the drag strip on several occasions. Today the vehicle is still roaming the streets, but now with even more power thanks to the upgraded D-1SC internals. High mileage ProChargers are not uncommon to see in the field. In fact, we have even seen a ProCharger supercharger roll through the shop that had over 200,000 miles on the clock!

1995 Pontiac Firebird Formula - Stock - But Not A Rock

From the November, 2010 issue of GM High-Tech Performance. Check out our Brute Speed 1995 Formula in the current issue of GM High-Tech! Internally stock engine with a ProCharger P-1SC and a Moser 12 bolt rear end.

Fuel Mileage and ProCharger…WHAT?!

A supercharger will decrease the fuel economy of your vehicle, right? WRONG!!

Although roots superchargers have significant parasitic load and do dramatically decrease fuel economy, centrifugal superchargers (like ProCharger) will yield approximately the same fuel economy as normally aspirated engines under normal throttle conditions. This means that after the installation of a ProCharger intercooled supercharger system, if you drive your vehicle in the same manner as you did before the installation, you should see no drop in fuel economy and in some cases customers with heavier vehicles have actually increased their fuel economy because of less frequent downshifts! However, the purpose of the supercharger is to get more air into the engine…and when you add air you must add fuel. So when you stand on the throttle and that impeller starts force-feeding your motor the air it deserves, your fuel system will allow more fuel in to create gobs of Grandma scaring horsepower. It is during those moments when supercharged vehicles see a drop in fuel economy.

To explain further, a supercharged engine operates at a much higher power and efficiency level than a naturally aspirated engine. So why, under normal operating conditions, would making an engine more efficient decrease fuel economy?

ProCharger has a large and ever changing fleet of test vehicles running the streets and race tracks every year. We use these vehicles to test everything you would expect from a company like ProCharger…durability, aesthetics, noise, drivability, power. What you may not expect is that we also collect fuel mileage data on these test mules. A small snapshot of some of our data is below.

  • 2005 Mustang V6
    • Intercooled ProCharger P-1SC
    • Automatic Transmission
    • Factory Mileage Claim: 19 City/25 Hwy
    • ProCharged Fuel Mileage: 22.55 mpg
  • 2004 Corvette Z06
    • Intercooled ProCharger P-1SC-1
    • Manual Transmission
    • Factory Mileage Claim: 19 City/28 Hwy
    • ProCharged Fuel Mileage: 21.00 mpg
  • 2007 Mustang GT
    • Intercooled ProCharger P-1SC-1
    • Automatic Transmission
    • Factory Mileage Claim: 18 City/23 Hwy
    • ProCharged Fuel Mileage: 19.59 mpg
  • 2006 Dodge Charger 5.7L HEMI
    • Intercooled ProCharger P-1SC-1
    • Automatic Transmission
    • Factory Mileage Claim: 17 City/25 Hwy
    • ProCharged Fuel Mileage: 21.00 mpg

The majority of the above data was taken during mostly highway driving on the 2007 Hot Rod Power Tour. As you can imagine, fuel mileage was not the main concern of our drivers when cruising along side the amazing cars that grace the Power Tour. The Dodge Charger fuel mileage was recorded on a recent roundtrip from Kansas City to Tampa, FL. Also, keep in mind that the above vehicles are all stock with the exception of the intercooled ProCharger system. Your fuel mileage may vary depending on your vehicle combination and driving habits.

2001 Chevrolet Silverado customer testimonial after the installation of a P-1SC-1 Intercooled ProCharger system.

“My gas mileage has increased nearly 1 mpg on my annual trip from Michigan to Alabama, from 16.19 mpg naturally aspirated to 17.06 mpg with the ProCharger. Considering these trips are taken during Christmas in the winter with periods of idle time and speeds with the flow of traffic the ProCharger actually helps gas mileage. Add the extra on demand power and the smiles per gallon, the truck makes the trips fun!”

2006 Hemi Ram customer testimonial after the installation of a P-1SC-1 Intercooled ProCharger system.

“I’ve got 34K miles on the supercharger system in the past 9 months, and it’s great. I pass other trucks on hills all the time while towing Bobcats and other heavy loads. And my fuel economy is about the same as it was before, but with a lot more power.”

Vette Magazine confirms it: 700+ hp from a ProCharged Z06 Corvette

The editorial staff at Vettemagazine are all about serving the enthusiastic owners of America’s only true sports car: the Corvette. So, when it comes to taking America’s sports car to supercar power levels, they couldn’t resist the allure of bolting on an intercooled ProCharger supercharger system to a 2009 Corvette Z06 and showing their readers just how easy 700+ horsepower really is.

Naturally-aspirated, the stock, low mileage ZO6 laid down a solid 459.8 rwhp, but when the ProCharged version got done torturing the dyno, jaws were hitting the floor: 583 rwhp which calculates to 711 horsepower at the flywheel. And keep in mind, this was with a conservative boost level and tune. Check out the July issue of Vette magazine or follow this link to read the online version of Vette Editor Jay Heath’s in-depth coverage of the installation and subsequent dyno session.

Suffice it to say, this Atomic Orange monster proved just how easy (and relatively cost-effective) it is for ProCharged ZO6 to knock the “King ZR1″ off of its rear-wheel horsepower hill.
